NOT THE ONLY ONE Student Forum
Are you a student who has experienced childhood sexual abuse?
You are not alone, even if it might often feel that way! Around 1 in 5 people have experienced some form of childhood sexual abuse. Yet, as a group, we are often invisible - not just to society but also to each other - and might experience stigma, isolation, and a lack of understanding and support. With the Not The Only One university project we want to change this and make the first step of bringing survivors together.
The Student Forum will be facilitated by our team of experienced survivors activists, who all have lived experience of childhood sexual abuse as well as experience in diverse forms of survivor activism. It will be a space for you to meet other survivors, to share experiences, and to explore what kind of support we need from universities as survivors.
Please book a place here: https://not-the-only-one-student-forum.eventbrite.co.uk
What happens on the day?
The forum will start with a little presentation from our team in which we will talk about the work we have done with the project in universities since February, themes which came up in our events so far, and plans to take the project forward.
This will be followed by time for getting to know each other, a sharing of experiences, and the opportunity for everyone to bring up and explore themes which are important to them.
After a tea break we will then present a list of action points and demands which we have collected in events in different universities and invite everyone to contribute and add to it. This will form the basis for developing a pledge which universities can take on how they support survivors in universities.
Who can attend?
We know that people can be at very different points in their process. Whether you are just realising that what happened to you was sexual abuse, simply looking for meeting others who ‘get it’, or you are keen to get involved in peer support or activism, You are absolutely welcome to attend the forum! You can engage in the way you feel comfortable with, this might be just being there and listening, sharing some of your experience, contributing to a list of demands, or getting more involved in taking action in your university.
The forum is open to all survivors of childhood sexual abuse who are currently studying in any UK university. We welcome survivors of all genders. The room is accessible for wheelchair users. Please get in touch and let us know if you have any other accessibility needs. The event is free, but you will need to book a place.
Facilitators: Silke Grygier is a survivor activist, psychologist, and dramatherapist. After having founded the Survivors' Collective and worked as a school counsellor in the last 4 years, she developed the Not The Only One project to reach out to childhood sexual abuse survivors in universities and create spaces for connection, activism, and support. Together with a team of survivor activists, she visits universities across UK to deliver presentations, workshops, survivors' forums, and support groups.
